Joe's prognostication

Joe in this Open Thread mentioned a possible presidential ticket of Sens.Reklai/Seid, asking "Is it far fetched to think that Senators Reklai/Seid could be a possible ticket?". Reklai's candidacy doesn't surprise me. I remember an item I posted last January about Reklai's intention of running for the highest office of the land.

A palauan matriarch nominated for 2005 Nobel Peace Prize

Palau Horizon (August 23 - 25)

At the age of 83 and a matriarch of Ikelau Clan of Koror, Gabriela Ngirmang bears the title of Mirair - the second ruling queen of Koror. "Still strong despite her advanced age, Ngirmang's relentless pursuit to a nuclear-free Palau along with many women and men back in the late 70's has earned her recognition. This peace activist's nomination was endorsed by the Ecumenical Center for Research, Education and Advocacy in Fiji".

It was not the first time for Palauans to be nominated in this global peace award. Two Palauan organizations  - Kltal Reng and Otil A Beluad - were in the forefront of legal and political battle to retain provisions to prohibit nuclear weapons for Palau were nominated in 1989. Nigrmang was the president of Otil A Beluad. She says, "But I feel there were many women who worked very hard courageously. Some of them have passed away. I share this nomination with them".

p.s. I believe Gabriela Ngirmang is a grandmother of a fellow commenter on this site, Ms. Sunny Williams. Yoo hoooo!!

Remengesau on School Lunch Program

Tia Belau (Aug. 19 - 26)

"Some politicians, including President Remengesau, publically supported the suspension of the lunch program saying that it is the responsibility of parents to feed their children and that the program was swamped with abuses and wastes as the food were not nutritious and were only consumed by students who are used to eating junk food."

School Lunch Program

Tia Belau (Aug. 19 - 26)

"Justification for the suspension is shortage of funds for food service to cover the last two months of August and September left in the 2005 budget yea". In his letter to the President with cc to OEK, governors, school principals, and PTA's, Education Minister Katosang told the President that "they have met all school principals and PTA Chairmen and have informed them of the suspension of school lunch for three months and further requested them to make arrangements for parents to prepare their children's lunch until FY 2006 becomes available". The letter did not explain why the notice was not issued in June of July but waited until four days before school started". Education Director Emery Wenty explained that the amount requirdd last year and for this year , was $649,000 but Olbiil Era Kelulau appropriated only $565,000 which is enough only for seven months leaving the last two months of school year without funds. The amount needed for one month is $30,000."

Tia Belau (August 19 - 26)

"Dr. Manix Jonathan, a resident physician in Belau National Hospital who was accepted for a five year Pathology Residency Training Program at Chang Kung Memorial Hospital in Taipei is nearing completion of his third year residency training. State Elections in November

Tia Belau (Aug. 12 - 19)

On November 8, Koror State will pit two term Governor Johnny Gibbons going for his final term against Yoshitaka Adachi, Speaker of the Koror State Legislature.

Ngaraard will hold its election two days later. Only Jonathan Maui has declared a run for the governorship while report says that Ngaraard State Olbetibel Speaker Gibson Kanai, Martin Sokau, and Albert Shiro are said to be interested.

Ngchesar State will hold their election later on November 26 with 9 seats up for grabs. The nine elected members and the eight traditional chiefs will then select a governor from the elected members only. The current Governor Florencio Adelbai needs to be elected first by the people and then to win again the majority support of legislature to retain his governorship.

No school lunch

Today is the first day of school for all public schools in Palau. Over 2,800 students from grades 1 - 12 are enrolled for this year. However, lessons will be half-day only. No money to pay lunch.

Diaz was on the radio this morning preaching to the effect that parents should shift away from the prevalent TT mentality about the need for government handout and start providing lunch for their children. Mentioning in one instance that it might come down to a choice between cutting your Social Security check to pay for school lunch programs. How lame?

Even if argument can be made for parents to pick-up the tab for their children's lunch, I think it is total neglect of responsibility for our leaders to tell them at this stage that they will have to fork more of their money to pay their children's lunch. If that was the plan all along why weren't the parents informed and to prepare themselves ahead of time.

Now to go on the radio and sermonize about the handout TT mentality of the parents is only to build a strawman for an argument. There is no TT mentality, I bet most of the parents of the school children are to young to have a clear memory of the TT government. And to lay blame on them unfortunately is another sign of leaders disconnected with reality. Nevertheless, unfortunately there are leaders with empty mentality who have failed miserably to grasp the problem at hand. Is it any wonder why OEK members are enjoying their $50K salary per annum while lecturing the populace about the virtue of picking-up the tab?

Yap governor grounded?

There's a buzz around town that Continental Airlines has banned Yap Governor Robert Ruecho on all its future flights after an alleged indecent assault on a female flight attendant. It is reported that the flight attendant with her arms held up with trays and well above the seats came to a halt in front of the governor. With her waiting for the traffic to clear before making her way down aisle the governor then allegedly took liberty to grope the pair of the pointed mammary glands (breasts) of the female flight attendant. At that instance she turned around and walked up and reported the incident to the flight supervisor.

The governor is said to have drank heavily with his Palauan friends prior to his flight from Palau to Yap. And continued to drink while in flight. He is said to have made a lot of commotion and keep asking fellow flyers whether they know that he is the governor from Yap. It is also reported that the flight captain was said to have told the governor that such action cannot be from the governor of Yap but can only be from an animal.

Ruecho still have a year to go in office but it is reported that his fellow citizens just coudn't wait for the election time to kick him out. He has trully embarrased his people of Yap, his nation of the FSM and defiled the office of the governor.
