President Remengesau said he will make an announcement December 15 on his choice to be the lone chief compact negotiator to handle the renegotiation of the Compact of Free Association (COFA). THe chief negotiator will be staffed and supported by existing ministries. "The negotiating team will be a small, carefully selected group, rather than a large commission or task force in order to expedite the review process," Remengesau said. Th president added that the Compact negotiator will not be politically tainted...chosen negotiator should not be a candidate for the upcoming elections next year to ensure that he will focus on the negotiation.
The first US-Palau COFA talks is set to be held in January 2008 regarding the review of the COFA between the two nations. Minister of State Temmy Shmull has announced that Palau accepted the proposal made earlier by the US to arrange for early talks on Section 432 of the COFA. That provision of the Compact states that a formal review and the relationship between US and Palau should be held on the 15th anniversary of COFA.
