One of the best idea I have seen......
This will not only help boost activities to help the ailing economy, but also opens up Babeldaob for a needed transformation that all have been waiting for......

Mesulang Mr.President

Brilliant idea Mr. President !!

Also good for land values. Need some businesses up there and this is a good start.

I know it is a good idea but there is the problem. I bet you don't want to see our capital building in the mid's of hotels and businesses. At least far away that it will not deter the beautiful sight in our Ngerulmud Building. Just my 10 cents..

thanks

Miss Informed

Good plan. It is also important for the President to back up this plan with improved infrastructure balanced with the developments; hence facilitate development progress and minimize impact to community.

good idea for the president since he ownes 3 acres of land in ngerulmud. this is something that will benefit only the rich people who ownes land around ngerulmud area.

This is a great idea....PLEASE MR PRESIDENT, GIVE PALAUANS PRIORITY to move their first, they severly need it....

If JT owns 3 acres of land then this idea will definitely raise the value of his property. Don't forget, this guy is a lawyer so you better recognize. Don't be fooled again and again and again you mother fuckers!!! Why not give tax break to the entire northern Babeldaob? Sorry to say this but Ngerulmud/capitol is only good for photo ops for politician wannabe and that's all. Melkeok is of course beautiful but unfortunately the best parts are already taken and the remaining surrounding areas suck!

it's crazy how anything this administration proposes to do can be spun into something negative - wow!

to the jt supporters:
clearly, this site thrives on negativity but don't lose hope. the best man has the reigns and although it may not happen overnight, we will see progress. we just have to be patient and wait faithfully.

may joy be yours!

MESULANG.

That's the first good thing I've heard so far. Keep it coming Mr. Press.

theres nothing wrong with a 2 mile redias of a tax free zone. the question is who will benefit from it? 10% of the population or 20%?? we know who ownes the land around ngerulmud and most of them if not all are busunessman. we need cash flow in Palau to generate revenue, so do we give a tax break to the businesses or to the labor force?? this will only benefit the businesses and not the employees. my concern is that they need to introduce a bill that will help generate revenue, not something that will create more expenses, like increase the salary or tax free zone areas.

they need to come up with a better traffic violation law, increase the fine for speeding, dui etc. they need to come up with a better bank laws like auto loan, long term construction at no interest till you move in to your house than turn it to mortgage loan up to 20 or 25 years at 4%, etc. something that can help the general public. a law that will require employers to provide medical insurance and work comp to the employees at some %. that will help most people in Palau with their medical bills.

people are moving out of Palau coz they can not afford their house payment at 8% for 15 years, looking for a better medical insurance for the family, etc. what can the government do to stop the migration out of Palau.

Osengek,

Your comments on improving traffic laws to help generate revenues is right on target. Many traffic offenses have fines that have remained at $100 since 1967. We need a comprehensive overhaul to update our traffic laws to make sure that fines for violations have both punitive and deterrent effect on the public.

Is it just me or does the new Admin smell fishier then beraom fish?

Miss Informed,
What did Helen Keller say when she passed by a fish mart? Answer: "Good afternoon ladies!"
Kudos to President Toribiong for a brilliant idea. He is listening well to his advisors.

767 Melekeok,
That is about the most stupid, coarse joke i've had to put up with, ever. it is idiots like you who give us palauans such a bad rep. grow the hell up and get a life! as for your comment on "kudos to our president..." what advisers? do you know of any palauans (who are still here) with any kind of working knowledge of economics, real business skills and intelligence? i am not talking about all the front businesses that are supposedly owned by palauans and thriving only because they are run by foreigners. well, do you? surangel's you think? nope, that is still a front. the wife is the reason for that business. any others? please let me know if you can think of a single one. and, i am not referring to extortion type businesses like the port. we are so screwed, aren't we? laters.

Belau Banana,
What about Franco and Sons, Yano's Market, Mobil Gas Stations, Neco and it affiliates (who regularly challenge Surangels in the yearly Independence Day race and I think that the wife doesn't run that "boat"...and by the way Mr. Tuu SW Jr. is the President and CEO of Surangel and Suns's. His brothers also directly manage their sections of the company and thus are well versed in economics) Gibbons Enterprise Coporation is also an investment and development company isn't it? And Franco Gibbons went to school right? Also you have a untapped educated workforce at PCC. Many of the instructors are well educated and many are Palauan too....There are some even venturing out into the private sector and many scholarship recipients will be returning albeit for a short time to repay outstanding balances with the Scholarship Board. They are untapped as well. I agree there is a shortage of truly skilled people in this country, but to make due with what he's got I think the President is doing allright. Shit he tried to get Ms. Bells, and based on her education he was right on the money-but that didn't pan out very well. Lets hold off on the being screwed until we really are. No one, not even you nor I could solve this problem in a short time. Its barely been a month since he took office. Shit its a process my friend...but if this shit does turn nasty, I will give you the props you deserve for calling that shit. As to 767 Melekeok's quote.....I think it was Afroman who said that in his song CRAZY RAP(Aka Colt 45)...But Helen Kellers a good quote as well...She's eloquent bitch.

NO WAY! PALAU!!
this proposal if passed, will only benefit the few who owns land there and around the capitol building. why not make it tax free w/in 10 miles at least so it can make a real difference. seems like another loop hole their proposing.
I'd say lets pass the law tax free to the first 20 big developers for a year or two w/in 10 miles from melkeok. developers w/at least 1 million in assets.
just a thought. thank you.

Watch out, Belau's economy will soon become the best there is when JT returns from Taiwan. Investors are coming you all. Melkeok is the next New York City...New Melky Hood it is!

Toribiong to visit Taiwan
Wednesday, 18 February 2009 00:00 By Bernadette H. Carreon - Horizon News Staff
KOROR (Palau Horizon) – President Johnson Toribiong first official visit outside of Palau will be to Taiwan.

Toribiong told reporters that he is scheduled to visit the country on Feb. 22 through Feb. 28.

Earlier Maggie Taiching Tien, Taiwan’s Ambassador to Palau in behalf of Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou invited Toribiong and First Lady Valeria to conduct a state visit to their country.

Toribiong

Green Order-
Well said. Your comments are always thoughtful.

Funny to create a tax free zone there. Almost all of Palau is a tax free zone, especially if you are from a prominent family or a fishing company, PMIC....hmmmm... Only ones paying taxes are the squeezed Moms and Pops.

Alii,

Ekomdiou mondai ea WCTC a mla start elmla lease era public right across the street from Police sub-station or the entrance to Capitol.

We should ask President JT to reduce loan interest rate 3 to 6% pa and increase term to 25 years.

Noriwo is protecting his empire PNDB and not looking for help to us Palauans. He is well off from his retirement from US and Palau. He makes alot of money ($7,000 a month). He does not want us to get $1,500,000. million dollars that he gave to Phillip Reklai (PRA).

We need more of us to get that loan amount than being selective. I hope these young new members will change the course of developing our nation by identifying the loan funds of $5,000,000 million dollars to the interest local to start their small businesses in TAX FREE ZONE in Ngerulmud, Melekeok. PNDB shall beginto support us Palauans in order stop the fronts.

How the HELL Bangladeshi unskill workers now own the small stores from topside althe way Happy Landing at Madalaii. PRA even allowed Bangladeshi "FRONT" to rent his space for income.

We are not under pressure but under DESPERADO.
Your kids went to Colleges but some were sent by Sebastian Andres to joined the US military with intention for $250,000 life insurance. He is sentencing them to killed in battle/war than dying from drinking and accidents. Which creating KEMELDIIL and ELDECHEDUCH expenses guaranteed.

Merulmud,
