Palau needs a new generation of real leaders...

derumk, ngungyang, angry et al,

Palau needs development. Peleliu needs development. Give our people a chance. It is obvious the chiefs of Peleliu support development. That is why they leased that island. It is their decision and within their powers as chiefs to act what they believe is good for the people of Peleliu.

What is wrong with development?

bizbuzch, yeah we know that Palau WANTS development but we know those things will come in later years, we dont need to overdevelop now because there are future leaders who are coming up as well. if people today intesify development today, locations will be damaged and there would be no opportunity for fresh minds to work with. if palau today carelessly develop and develop, there would be nothing in the islands to utilize cause its either gonna be a run-down of poor development or something else.

i say give opportunity for future minds. these old farts are overreacting and fueled my God knows what to modernize palau to more that what it can really hold.

development comes with a price that involves long term consequences if not well planned. Look at Palasia.

Angry,

Get real. Who in the future will develop Palau. In 2009, Palau will conclude it terms under COFA I and depending on how generous the US will respond to our negotiating team, Palau will commence its relation with the US under COFA II.

In the meantime, FIB is getting less applications for developments compared to the early years of our COFA. And nearly $12 million just evaporated from local circulation because of PSB fiasco.

Now, where do you get your confidence that our future leaders will develop Palau? Besides, the chiefs of Peleliu support the concept of developing Ngedebus so, what is wrong with that?

Let's face it. I rather see our people develop our island with the support of local leaders now so when our future minds return they can get into management, etc.

Let the people of Peleliu decide.

biz,

I wish its easy to believe what your saying. Just because the chiefs agree with the development doesnt necessarily mean its a GOOD ONE! Example, is Shimao Co., just because Reklai is okay with the idea doesnt mean its Good. I dont have the detail information about this development plan, so I will limit my comments till I found out more.

I'm just curious. What's the SALARY for the Minister of State annually. Tia Kora KMAL DERIR A ELEBACHEB EL LOMDASU A DEVELOP ERNGII. Ereii a KN adodengelii el mla erngii a ududel...endi Mr. Shmull? Bai mla mo seuak el mo Minister ra State.

biz,

in regards to your last paragraph. I beg you to please come back to reality. "future minds return they can get into management, etc." LOL :=) RREEAALLY! WHOEVER'S GO'NA OWN THE PROJECT WILL BE MANAGING IT CAUSE AT THE END ALL THE PROFITS GOES TO THEIR BANK ACCOUNT! Right now it LOOKS like its go'na be KN and Mr. Shmull. Not sure if they have a foreign partner.

Ngungyang,

You are free to pursue development for your sake and that of your state. Do it. If you want to do something, do it now. Why wait. Worst of all, why wait for someone you don't know to do it for you.

Come up with your own plan and convince your leaders to support you and then go from there. This is free enterprise, remember?

You talk about greed. What makes you think the future leaders will not be that greedy. Besides, who in the world would like to pursue develoment for the benefit of others.
Those in that department are called social workers. We dont have social workers and we don't need them to develop Palau. We need leaders with vision, and capital.

Angry, Ngungiang, et al:

Ngarngii a tekoi ra belau el kmo: "a imol ngikel (fish) el ngara bub a ungil ra teruich el ngara ikrel."

biz,
good point there! i have to admit, i was skeptical about these developments but what for? yes we should conserve our island but we should also make a little room for improvement/development. we can't keep depending on renegotiating the COFA, because in the long run, we wouldn't have a stable economy. i'm not saying we ought to exploit our resources, however we should find ways to welcome development yet limiting it's damages. i think we should clean our olbiil first. leaving those who are really there for the people and not for the pay check and whatever else under the table.

i've been studying alot about poverty and i'm afraid that one day it might hit us, considering all these corrupt leaders we have. development is good if it's only done legitimately. all in all, let's all vote for the best ones who hold people's interest at heart this comming election, let's not vote for our relatives and our sister's husband's friend cousin. oh and let's also vote for those who actually take action and not all talk no action...lol

Ngung:
I don't what's coming but as far as I'm concerned we are not a democracy anymore. With the demise of PSB, we are now officially a KAKISTOCRACY.

Kedung:
UNDP report says that 23 percent of ROP's total population are living in poverty or deemed economically vulnerable.

Uchelmelis:

Westernization introduced a modern economy. As it had throughout Micronesia, the United States created a WELFARE STATE in Palau.(Rosenberg 1996)
I beginning to wonder my friend who takes and who gives in this relationship. In my own observation, I see that those young palauans who live and make their living outside of Palau are not dependent on the national govt subsidies that keep basic necessities in Palau affordable but instead are intent to carve a place for themselves in this world and at the same time sending money home. The question I would like to ask out loud is are the contributions of these so-called "fish outside" ever really taken into consideration? while the so called "individual fish(s)" in ROP positions of power continue to live like "birds in gilded cages."

because bizbuzch, I AM THE FUTURE LEADER OF BELAU. and I care what goes on today because it sets the course for whats ahead. If you'd careless about whats gonna happen to your decendents seven generations from now, thats your choice, but I think otherwise. I care. and. i am a realist so dont get me wrong, i know exactly what your talking about. Well, i guess there is nothing we can do huh, this inevitable parallel of events looking more like Guam is probably convinent for everyone. I dont know, what do you think?

and also, with reflect to what you said, why is that relavent?

and yeah, let the people of Pelilou decide. Heck, im not from there!! hehe.

but still, local developers need the help and cash from else where right? so where does that cash economy come from?

and yes, poverty is present in Palau. I have driven to the edges of lil towns and neighborhood and seen families who are living in such conditions. like as said before, the gap between rich and poor is greater these days. and what is Belau doing about it? we have no clue.

Dear Members,

Thank you for this wonderful website. The people living in Palau are very much shocked with PSB closure. A lot of elderly people have deposited their few dollars in the bank, now they are going to sing "Silent Night" this coming Christmas season with the burden in their heart for not seeing a penny of their savings for awhile. It's only a reasonable to stop pointing fingers at each other (OEK and the ROP President) but to start looking for justice in regards to this issue. Where is the Special Prosecutor Walton? Why isn't he doing his job with the AG by calling those few individuals (PSB top officials) who are responsible for the closure of the bank? Why the pension money $1 million transferred to the PSB without the public hearing or acknowledgement from the public? If Sen. Reklai did truly use his WCTC stocks as a collateral to Pension Plan in exchange for $1 million to PSB, then how many WCTC stocks did he use, and what is the value of the stocks? Is his stocks really worth that $1 million dollars? The members of the pension plan need to address these questions.

Ordinary people who have outstanding loans in the PSB are requesting to stop their allotment to PSB to pay off the loans until the top officials of PSB be accountable for their actions, and possible be persecuted. If there is a petition going around the island for those people who have outstanding loans in PSB to sign, please let us know through this site.

Please tell me that poverty is not present in Palau...ngerang meng diak el tobed el mera merikel melosiik a ureor. I just don't see it in Palau when I visit. Ngmeral mechas a renguk raikal chelsang ea rechad adi ngarngii a ududir. Poverty cannot be present in Palau? Are you sure?

biz,

ur point is well taken and yes we do need leaders with visions and capital. Trust me, we have no shortage of these types of leaders with such attributes. The PROBLEM is when their VISIONS is more focused on THEIR FUTURE WEALTH MORE than the welfare of the citizens.

In regards to your comment about "SOCIAL WORKERS." :=)hehe Keep in mind that the purpose of the government is to improve the THE WELL BEING OF THE PEOPLE and not for selected individuals. These government offices are there for people who are willing to serve the people by improving their way living. That's where we get the term PUBLIC SERVANTS. The only problem is when people seek these government positions to persue their individual goals which have lead our government into this current crisis we're dealing right now, PSB.

Its very simple. If you want to get rich, be a business man and work hard to attain your personal goals. On the other hand, if you have the heart to SERVE THE INTEREST OF PEOPLE, then seek these government offices otherwise will face more problems in the government with "CONFLICT OF INTERESTS." Just take a look at all the members of OEK and Executive Branch.

President TR= His brothers, cousines, uncles and aunties all have government positions right now :=) Oh yeah, and he owns a bad ass Harley Davidson.
Johny Reklai= PSB and others
Koshiba= Continental Stocks, Fishing Co. and more
Alen Seid= Need I say anything
Diaz. Speaker, Bells and should I continue to mention names.

People please, Enough is Enough. "MEKNGIT A NGLEMOKEL."

Joe;

A few threads ago I was called a king of "malaprops".

How one can twist words- my words deserve the spin you've spun.

so poverty is starring at our faces? that is what i'm afraid of. look at those other deprived countries, all they're doing is beg for money, which has not solved the problem. look at what we're doing now, it looks like we're going the same direction, begging for another COFA negotiation. my point is, why not develop a little? although i don't agree with the idea of 80000 chinese moving into the island but why not let other legitimate developments in? i know that there's a lot of bright future leaders, but that's the problem..FUTURE. how can we shut down today's purposals because we depend on the unforseeable? palau needs development, which should bring employment, thus bringing more money in circulation. i'm just afraid time might run out.

kedung,

who said to shut down today's purposals? I only said to elect people to the government offices that have the heart to serve the people not of their own greedy desires for money. Can you name few of the legitimate developments that your talking about?

kedung,

who said to shut down today's purposals? I only said to elect people to the government offices that have the heart to serve the people and not of their own greedy desires for money. We need people holding these government posistions clear of any "CONFLICT OF INTEREST!"

Minister Sadang = PSB
Minister Shmull = Where da hell did he get enough money to rent a lease for $18,000/month? Is the Minister Salary enough to cover even half of that rent? C'mon people, we may not be present to see what's happening behind the scene but we sure know how to add & subtract. Do da math.

Can you name few of the legitimate developments that your talking about?

For too long the people of Palau have been nice to our elected leaders. And what do they do in return? Steal more from us.

We have run out of choices and patience; there's no one there to help us or stand for us.

I say we overthrow the OEK and the President and hold new elections. The Council of Chiefs can serve as the interim government until a new honest government takes office.

This is how's it's done in other countries.

I say we petition the Senate Majority to resign

Let us hear from Senator Asanuma. You say the Senate received the proposed FIA amendement in January 2005 and because it was referred to the Ways and Means Committee we should direct our questions to Seid who is now the committee chairman.

What did you do with this bill? You were the chairman of the ways and means committee in January 2005. It is clear there was no urgency then but here we are, pointing fingers at senator seid only because he is the chairman of ways and means committee now.

Bizbuzch:
Well put!

Instead of our OEK members pointing fingers at each other (which could soon explode into parliamentary brawls!), they ought to work head-to-head to better protect our financial industry (particularly the customers).

Like you and other interested minds, I shall await Senator Asanuma's response.

TO ALL OF YOU DISGRUNTLED CITIZENS: ponder on this, we just got duped into paying our elected officials (OEK members) $50,000-plus a year to plunder the "national treasure" of Palau!

I'm off to work, and I can't stand spending another 8-hour day on the Ngerulmud compound staring at these crooks and pretentious pols!

Biz, Ores, et al:

I would like to add to the aforementioned and ask the following questions:

Why is it that our good Sen. Asanuma recuse himself from this PSB thang when it affects 7000 citizens claiming conflicts of interest, when he also introduced a vacrancy bill?

When he introduced the vacrancy bill wasn't that a conflict of interests, too?

Belau is sooooo small that anythang/bill enacted by the OEK can be claimed to be a conflict of interest, one can always argue.

ores,

must be hard to get up in the morning and go to work knowing that you have to face these crooks and work with them all day knowing that they make so much more money than most palauans and all they think about is whats good for them and their company. its time to move some of them out of that compound and send them back to where they belong, (jail ). they think that their next to god and nothing can and will happen to them. somebody should make sure that no one get away from this mess. its been going on too long and they keep on doing this shit thinking that they can get away with it by pointing fingers to each other till such time that it get swept under the rug, and they get paid good money doing it. sickning.....

ngungyang,

you said it. seriously, i was almost sure at some point in my life that more than half of our population are more democratic than they are republicans. (if we were to have political parties as in the US) apparently, i have been proven wrong. it seems like the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. and have you noticed that recently all we have been hearing and seeing in the news is about how to get more businesses in palau and investing in big companies. what happened to the democratic view where you give the money to the people to spend in businesses and in turn the money will be recycled within the economy (well, unless we get big foreign investors who will drain the money out of our local economy). that's probably something that congress could think about.

did it have to get this big for all of us, including our leaders and their constituents, to realize that our political forefathers might have taken too big of a bite out of the apple that they are struggling very hard to swallow now? has anyone informed our leaders about this site so they can at least read our comments?!

I have to concur with "one man" because the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, because we cannot just follow our own laws.

I'm waiting for my money, but the CPA Review that I've examined looks to say that I'll be getting 40cents on the dollar if I'm lucky...do the math.

So what now. Finger pointing is not appropriate when we have a serious situation in front of us.

This goes to show that OUR LEADERS can't make useful policy decisions even in the event of a crisis.

All the while, people are waiting for their money.

Grrrhhh, same public officials in yet another drama. Our small Island is being sold bit by bit and we have problems that are not being solved but being played by the blaming game.

The PSB debacle is now caught int the political guagmire. Our leaders will approach it with their usual way of doing things. Play the blame game, debates and more debates, grandstanding and all the while nothing is being done. I am afraid like all other crimes that have been committed by the oligarchies it will be swept away and no one will be held accountable. Our cries for justice on this site are but whimperings of the abused that fall on deaf ears. Where is the compassion of our leaders toward our people who were affected by PSB? Nothing but talk so far. blah, blah, blah, blah. All our leaders should all get a lump of coal in their Christmas stokings this Christmas.
